Portable Cabin Material Guide

Frames, panels, insulation and finishes — what to choose and why.

The frame

Most portable cabins use an MS (mild steel) tubular frame. The two key variables are the gauge (thickness) of the steel and the coating (paint / powder-coat / galvanised).

Heavier gauges and galvanised / powder-coated finishes deliver longer life, especially in humid coastal or mineral-rich environments.

Insulation

EPS (expanded polystyrene) and PUF (polyurethane foam) are the two main insulation options. PUF offers better thermal performance and is preferred for AC-installed cabins and long-duration installations. EPS is cost-effective and sufficient for non-AC or short-duration use.

Exterior and interior finishes

Exterior options include GI sheet, powder-coated GI and FRP. Interior options include laminate, vinyl and painted finishes, with vinyl and laminate floors being the most common.
